FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl joined Billie Eilish onstage last night (Thursday, December 15) at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
In tribute to late drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in March, the pair performed an acoustic duet of “My Hero.”
Earlier this year, Eilish wore a t-shirt with Taylor’s image on it at the Grammy Awards, and Dave shared what that meant to him and the other FOO FIGHTERS.
“The room was filled with real tears of love and gratitude,”
Grohl remembered their reaction while seeing it from his home. His family was also feeling overwhelmed.
A few months ago, Eilish and her collaborator brother, Finneas O’Connell, discussed Hawkins’ passing on the red carpet of the 94th Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Finneas said:
“Taylor was such a legendary player. We were admirers of his work years before we got to meet him. And we only met him a handful of times — I wish we got to spend more time with him — but he couldn’t have been a kinder, cooler, more generous person as well. And such a deeply inspiring person. We’re just heartbroken.”
According to Billie:
“It was incredibly heartbreaking. It was right before we went on stage. And we got the news, and it really, really tore us all apart. It’s horribly, horribly tragic.”
Hawkins died just before FOO FIGHTERS’ performance at a festival in Bogota, Colombia. At the time of his death, he was 50 years old.
While no cause of death was announced, a toxicology report revealed traces of opioids, marijuana, and antidepressants in his body.
Drug mix was not cited as a factor by investigators.
Two tribute concerts were staged in honor of Hawkins by FOO FIGHTERS. Wembley Stadium hosted the first tribute concert on September 3.
On September 27, Hawkins’ adopted hometown, Los Angeles, hosted a farewell concert to raise money for the Musicares and Music Support charities.
