Clarence Thomas Career

After earning his law degree, Clarence Thomas traveled to Missouri to start his legal profession. After passing the legal exam, he was recruited as an Assistant Attorney General for Missouri.

He served there under state Attorney General John Danforth from 1974 until 1977. He then departed to begin working as an attorney for Monsanto Chemical Company.

In 1979, Thomas moved to Washington, D.C., and started working again for John Danforth, a senator of the United States.

From 1979 to 1981, Thomas worked as a legislative assistant for the Senate Commerce Committee, mostly focusing on energy-related matters.

From 1981 to 1982, he served as the Office for Civil Rights Assistant Secretary of Education.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) then chose Thomas as its Chair, which he held from May 1982 to March 1990.

He sought to lessen employment discrimination at the EEOC and was well known for his staunch opposition to affirmative action.

President George H.W. Bush proposed Thomas as a candidate for the position of a federal judge on the U.S. Court of the District of Columbia Circuit in October 1989.

Clarence Thomas As A Justice Of The U.S Supreme Court

Clarence Thomas was a probable nominee for the Supreme Court in 1990 when President George H. W. Bush was looking to replace Justice William Brennan.

Bush finally chose David Souter, though. Bush didn’t propose Thomas as a nominee until Justice Thurgood Marshall’s resignation one year later.

Thomas’ nomination hearings immediately rose to the top of the 1990s’ most contentious occasions.

Anita Hill, who had worked for Thomas at the U.S. Dept of Education and the Equal Opportunity Commission, accused Thomas of sexual harassment.

Hill initially withheld her accusations from the public. However, following Hill’s FBI interview, the accusations were made public. Hill was asked to give testimony after the allegations became public.

Hill testified during televised hearings in October 1991 that Thomas harassed her sexually while serving as her supervisor at two federal jobs.

She alleged that he made explicit sexual comments and repeatedly asked her out. Hill further said that Thomas exaggerated his sexual abilities and discussed his body in great detail.

Despite the controversy, Thomas was confirmed as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on October 15, 1991.

Clarence Thomas Investments

Thomas’ revised income disclosure statement for 2018 revealed that he received dividend and interest income from various investments. However, most of his investments generated less than $1,000 annually.

These investments consist of Vanguard money market funds, a Wells Fargo CD, some stocks, REIT investments, and Universal Life Insurance policies that earn anywhere between $2,500 and $50,000 per year.

Furthermore, his income disclosure indicates that he earned up to $100,000 in rental income from a partnership called Ginger, Ltd.

Clarence Thomas Salary

In 1990, President Bush considered Clarence as a potential candidate for the Supreme Court to replace Justice Brennan but opted for David Souter. The following year, when Justice Marshall retired, Bush nominated Thomas instead of Clarence.

The confirmation hearings for Thomas became highly controversial in the 1990s. Clarence’s annual salary was estimated to be $90,000 at that time.
