During his playing days, Richardson was a flanker-halfback and was the 154th player selected in the 1958 NFL Draft. He won an NFL title with the Colts during his rookie season and used his championship money to open the 1st Hardees franchise along with a Colts teammate.
He co-founded Spartan Foods and was later the CEO of Flagstar, one of the biggest food companies in the country.
While he owned the Panthers, Richardson was one of the league’s most powerful owners because he was instrumental in negotiating a new players’ agreement that helped to end the 2011 lockout.
Under his ownership, the Panthers made it to two Super Bowls and three NFC championship games and were 15-1 in 2015 before falling to the Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
