Lue attended Rayton Senior High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where he played basketball and excelled under Coach Scalon. After school, he attended the University of Nebraska and was named to several All-Big teams during college.
After his junior season, Lue declared himself eligible for the NBA draft and was selected 23rd overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1998.
