Tyronn Lue’s Professional Career

After opting for early entry into the 1998 NBA draft, Tyronn Lue was selected 23rd overall by the Denver Nuggets but was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on draft night along with Battie in exchange for Nick Exel.

Although Lue’s first three years with the Lakers were disappointing, he excelled during the 2001 playoffs when he was used to guarding Allen Iverson in Game 1 of the Finals due to his quickness.

Despite Iverson executing a crossover and making a shot in front of him, and stepping over him, the Lakers went on to win the NBA championship that year with Lue appearing in each NBA Finals game.

Lue joined the Washington Wizards in the off-season of 2001, where he saw a significant increase in playing time and improved as a point guard.

Later, he joined Tracy McGrady on the Orlando Magic in 2003–2004, although the Magic had the poorest record in the NBA that season.

After the season, Lue was traded to the Houston Rockets, where he experienced a significant drop in playing time due to the team’s glut of point guards.

Sadly, his team had the worst record in the NBA and the worst record in the franchise’s history at 13-69 when he was eventually transferred to the Atlanta Hawks mid-season for Jon Barry, where he played with great success.

On Feb 16, 2008, Lue was acquired by the Kings in a trade that sent Mike Bibby to the Hawks, but he was waived by the Kings on February 28, 2008, without playing a game for them.

Lue later signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks on March 4, where he continued his playing career.

During his college career, Lue was recognized for his talents as a basketball player, receiving the First-team All-Big 12 award in 1998. The Nebraska Cornhuskers even retired his jersey, marking his legacy within the team.

Lue has also been acknowledged in the media for his coaching skills, winning the 2016 ESPY Award for Best Coach/Manager and Best Team for his work as coach of the Cavaliers. Finally, in his hometown of Mexico, Missouri, a street has been named “Tyronn Lue Boulevard” in his honor.
