Thandie Newton was born in Westminster, London, on November 6, 1972, to a Zimbabwean mother, Nyasha Jombe, and an English father, Nick Newton. Her mother was from a Shona chieftaincy family, while her father was a laboratory technician and artist.
Despite being born in London, Newton’s family soon returned to Zambia, where her little brother was born.
However, her birthplace has been confusing, with some sources reporting it as Zambia. Newton has confirmed in interviews that she was born in Westminster. Her name, “Thandiwe,” is of Nguni origin and means “beloved.”
When Newton was three years old, her family returned to England and settled in Penzance, where her father helped run his family’s antique business.
