Famous sitcom FRIENDS debuted more than two decades ago, and co creator Marta Kauffman has something to say about it.
Marta Kauffman talked about the show’s lack of diversity and said that it’s some of her ignorance. There were white shows, and there were black shows. There weren’t many multicultural shows, she explained.
The co-creator said that at that time, this is what she was thinking. The season had an entirely white cast. Marta addressed this as she explained that she didn’t know much back then, as much as she knows now. She wished she knew more.
Marta stated that people of different races are encouraged to work in her company. But back then, she didn’t think much about it as she thinks now.
The series was quite a hit and ahead of its time. The show’s stars noted that the show presented many things such as gay marriage, protected intercourse, and relationships. David Schwimmer said that he was pretty aware of the lack of diversity, and that’s why he pushed the creators to introduce Asian American women and black women on the show as his girlfriends. David also said that there should be an All Asian Friends and an All black Friends, but the producers introduced guest stars of other races.
While the show may have lack of diversity, it portrayed many other messages. As Marta said that back then, she didn’t think about it as much as she thinks about it now, it is understandable.
