As reported to 1 supposed activist organization in Norway, the lyrics of Aretha Franklin’s 1968 song “(You Have Made Me Feel Like) An Natural Woman” should be deleted from both Spotify and Apple Music.
Last week, the Trans Culture Mindfulness Alliance denounced the song on Twitter, claiming it incited violence against transgender women.
The group stated that Aretha Franklin’s 1968 ballad “Natural Woman” “perpetuates several damaging anti-trans prejudices.” Nothing as a “natural” woman exists.
“The music has contributed to inspiring acts of violence towards transgender women,” the statement said.
The TCMA is asking that it be taken off of Apple Music and Spotify.
Nevertheless, the organization later asserted in a letter to The Times on Monday afternoon that their initial Post was “satirical.”
The Post has contacted representatives for Spotify, Apple Music, but also Franklin for a response.
The Organization’s Mission
The organization’s mission is to advocate “cultural modifications to ensure the inclusiveness of trans individuals,” in line with its description on the social networking platform.
The criticism of the Queen of Soul’s work shocked several Twitter users, who doubted the veracity of the charges.
One more said, “OMG Quit attempting to cancel things and get a life. If THIS is your first priority, one’s life has to be incredibly miserable and pitiful. This song is fantastic! WAY TO GO, GIRL! @ArethaFranklin.”
Another person wrote, “I’m going to be listening to it right now due to this Post. It’s a terrific song. Thanks!”
Some others were so shocked by the revelation that they truly believed it to be a joke.
One person inquired, “Are you sure this is satire?” This is a spoof. Nice work, guys!
In a later tweet, the group clarified that they weren’t a parody account and that their goal was to “make society better fair for transgender individuals.”
Franklin’s song “A Natural Woman” was considered a powerful song with an uplifting message at the time.
Even in 2015, when Gerry Goffin and Carole King were honored, she sang the hit just at Kennedy Center in D.C.
