The 80-year-old drumming star has undergone emergency surgery after a routine checkup in London. The procedure has been successful, and the drummer has been advised to rest.
Charlie Watts is associated with the band since 1963 but is most likely to miss the upcoming band’s tour in the United States.
According to the Variety’s spokesperson,
“Charlie has had a procedure which was completely successful, but his doctors this week concluded that he now needs proper rest and recuperation. With rehearsals starting in a couple of weeks, it’s very disappointing, to say the least, but it’s also fair to say no one saw this coming.”
Charlie Watts’ position will be filled in by veteran drummer Steve Jordan, who calls it “an absolute honor and privilege” to be Watts’ substitute for the band’s tour. “No one will be happier than me to give up my seat on the drum riser as soon as Charlie tells me he’s good to go.”
According to Watts,
“I am working hard to get fully fit, but I have today accepted on the advice of the experts that this will take a while. After all the fans’ suffering caused by Covid, I really do not want the many RS fans who have been holding tickets for this tour to be disappointed by another postponement or cancellation. I have therefore asked my great friend Steve Jordan to stand in for me.”
The Rolling Stones had recently announced the relaunch of its tour last month after it had been postponed due to the pandemic. Rolling Stones’ co-founder, Keith Richards, said, “We’re back on the road! See you there.”
