The world of fashion and beauty has always attracted those who strive to create unique images and inspire others to change. In this industry, where talent and creativity play a key role, it is not easy to stand out and succeed.
But when passion for your business is combined with hard work and a desire to constantly evolve, the results are immediate. Samvel Arutiunian, a stylist who has conquered Russia, America, and Europe, will tell us about it.
Samvel, tell us how you started your career in the world of fashion and what pushed you to choose the profession of a stylist.
My history in the beauty industry began more than 16 years ago, after moving to Moscow from a small town near Tashkent. One day I went to a small hairdressing salon, where I got to know the masters and started visiting them regularly.
I was interested in watching their work, and in the sincere gratitude they received from their clients… It was probably then that I realized that I was very interested in this profession. One day, sitting in a chair during a haircut, I thought: “What if I become a master myself? How great it is to make people even more beautiful!“. By the way, with this motto, I go through life to this day.
What stages of your career do you consider the most significant?
It is difficult for me to single out some milestones as the most important. Perhaps, everything went on an ascending trend. My professional history began with prizes at international competitions when I was just starting my career as a hairdresser-stylist-modeler.
Then I was invited to work at L’Oréal Professional, a division of the Matrix brand, and I conducted training seminars in Moscow and other Russian cities. A big role in my career was played by participation in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Moscow and Dubai Fashion Week in Dubai. And, of course, the invitation to collaborate with the show “Fashion Verdict” on Channel One – for me, this is the best recognition of my merits and authority in the fashion industry.
Tell us about your international projects.
I’ve participated in a lot of interesting programs, but there are a few particularly striking ones. One such project was a ballroom dancing competition in downtown Hollywood, where my model took first place in several categories. Another significant project was in Los Angeles, where I created hairstyles for the contestants of the Mrs. European Universe beauty contest.
But the most memorable event was our big show at ARTEM/K/HAIR SALON, where my colleagues and I set a California record by doing 100 hairstyles in 60 minutes. It was an incredibly colorful and fabulous performance in front of an audience of over four hundred guests, including well-known bloggers, journalists, and fashion designers.
What are you working on now?
Oh, I get a lot of offers from different projects, mostly collaborating with beauty salons. Most often they are Salon YURIY in downtown Pasadena and ARTEM/K HAIR SALON in Beverly Hills. By the way, just recently we did an image transformation event with famous stylists and designers from Kazakhstan. We are also preparing a new show, but you will find out about it later.
What part of your work do you consider the most creative and what is the most difficult?
What I’m passionate about is the idea of radically transforming the heroines of show programs. That’s why I especially appreciate the experience of working on the program “Fashionable Verdict“, where I was able to put my skills and creativity into practice and fully reveal my professionalism.
At such moments I turn on all my imagination and use my accumulated knowledge to create a unique and harmonious image for each client. This is very energizing and gives new strength for further creativity.
Have you had moments when you wanted to change your profession?
Never. Not once in my 16 years, I have never thought of changing my profession. I love my work very much and I’m glad I chose the right craft.
Let’s talk about the industry as a whole. What trends and changes have you seen in the fashion world in recent years? What direction will it take next?
The changes in the beauty industry in recent years are significant and span several key trends. One of the main trends I will highlight is sustainability. More and more brands are focusing on eco-friendly and ethically produced products, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and minimizing packaging.
In this context, natural and organic cosmetics are becoming increasingly popular, responding to consumer demand for safe and clean products. Technology plays an important role. For example, augmented reality (AR) allows customers to virtually try cosmetics before buying – something that was unimaginable just a few years ago! Finally, inclusivity has become an integral part of modern branding.
Manufacturers are expanding their product lines to accommodate a variety of skin types and shades, allowing every consumer to find the right product for them. This approach is important and reflects the industry’s desire to be more responsive to individual customer needs.
What qualities do you think are necessary to become a successful stylist?
It is very important to develop creativity to create original looks and combinations, as well as to have a sense of style, and understand fashion trends and visual harmony. Communication skills help to find a common language with clients and colleagues, and attention to detail allows you to notice the little things that can affect the overall image.
Professionalism also requires knowledge of techniques and continuous improvement of skills, while patience helps you deal with different client requests and personalities. Finally, you need organization to succeed – this is a key quality for project management.
So in conclusion, what advice would you give to aspiring stylists who are just starting their journey in the fashion industry?
It is important for aspiring stylists to not just follow fashion trends, but to constantly evolve. The fashion world is changing fast and to stay in demand, you need to always be up to date with the latest techniques and approaches. Training does not end with a diploma – attending courses, master classes, and seminars should become part of your professional life.
Watching the work of experienced stylists, studying fashion shows, and constantly experimenting with different styles can help you find your unique style. It also helps to build a portfolio, which will be your main tool when looking for new clients and employers. At the beginning of your career, it is important to show what you can do and a portfolio is the best way to do this.
That being said, you should realize that technique and knowledge are only part of success. It is also important to be able to build relationships in the industry. Networking with colleagues, and clients, and attending professional events will help expand your network of contacts, which many times will be crucial in developing your career.
One of the key skills of a good stylist is listening to and understanding your clients: your ideas need to fit their style and lifestyle. This requires well-developed communication skills. The ability to find a common language with people, offer them non-standard solutions, and realize them will make you a sought-after specialist.
And, of course, patience and perseverance are your best friends on the road to success. The career of a stylist may start with difficulties, but with each step, each new project, and client you will become better. The main thing is not to give up and keep improving, because success in this profession comes to those who are ready to work hard and creatively approach every challenge.
