Last week, Jully Black, a Toronto native, captured international attention by rewriting the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem. She delivered a performance at the NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Terencia Capleton sent a hateful email to her, causing a significant disturbance in the country after she shared it on her social media platform. The email contained a racist comment targeting African nationals in Canada.
The mail contained Black’s modification of the lyrics from “Oh, Canada, our home and native land” to “Oh, Canada, our home on Native land,” acknowledging Canada’s colonial history.
In an interview with The National, the Grammy-winning musician stated, “I put the truth in the song. We’re here on indigenous land, smelling its air and feeling its warmth.”
Supporters formed the #OurHomeONNativeLand hashtag to endorse Black efforts. Her message received numerous positive comments and widespread support, resonating nationwide. Nevertheless, a recent Instagram post by Black presents a contrasting narrative.
Black shared a screenshot of a disturbing email containing profanity, racial insults, and hate speech that her colleagues received.
For the past seven days, I have ignored the trolls and keyboard gangsters. Black captioned the image, saying, “People have been telling me what they’re hearing, and I’ve been laughing because they’re quite funny.”
I received this one specifically through email in my group… I can’t deny that this one hurt a little bit. Black continues, “It truly made my heart weep that someone claiming to be of Indian heritage here in Canada would harbor this type of hate… witnessing the disrespect towards my Jamaican heritage.”
The hate directed towards me, including the threat of “You watch as what happens to you…” and all the other derogatory comments, made my heart weep. “You dare to unilaterally alter our national anthem,” questions Terencio Capleton in her email, despite residing in a white majority country. I can’t believe it!
Capleton concludes the email by declaring, “If you ever try to pull this s*it again, you watch and see what happens.”
Black titles a series of tweets as “I won’t flood my feed with any more negative posts. I just want you all to see the hate coming my way for being an Ally.” Black explains, “Oh, and just to clarify, I’m born and raised in Canada,” and includes the hashtags “#ThisIsCanada” and “#RacismDoesExist.”
Black’s supporters quickly rallied to her side.
The letter contained a threat. The comment, “I hope your team brought it to the authorities,” was written as follows.
“No. It exhibits extreme hostility at a completely different level. I could only skim through it as it triggered intense emotions. I apologize, Jully.”
