Charles Barkley’s NBA Career

Charles Barkley left Auburn University during his junior year and was drafted as the fifth pick in the first round of the 1984 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

By the 1986-87 season, he had become the team’s leader and was named the franchise player the following season.

During his eight seasons in Philadelphia, Barkley played in six All-Star games and was the MVP for two. He gained immense popularity and even had his signature shoe line with Nike.

In July 1992, Barkley was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he quickly established himself as a valuable asset.

He achieved a career-high 5.1 assists per game and averaged 25.6 points, leading the Suns to an NBA-best record.

Barkley was awarded Most Valuable Player shortly after being traded, becoming just the third player to achieve this honor soon after being traded. He also qualified for his seventh All-Star game.

However, severe back pain cut his time with the Suns short, and he announced that the 1995-96 season would be his last in Phoenix.

During his tenure, Barkley led the team in rebounds, steals, and scoring, earning All-NBA and All-Star honors. He also achieved a career-high .777 free throw shooting.

In 1996, Barkley was traded to the Houston Rockets, but his time with the team started rocky. He was arrested for the season opener due to a dispute with Charles Oakley during a preseason game.

Barkley battled severe back pain and missed 14 games out of 67. Despite this, he became the team’s second-leading scorer.

The Rockets ended the season with a 57-25 record and advanced to the finals but were defeated by the Utah Jazz.

Due to ongoing injuries and pain, the 1999-2000 season was Barkley’s last in the NBA. He retired on April 19, 2000, and left the court to a standing ovation, ending his 16-year Hall of Fame career.

Charles Barkley Olympics

Charles Barkley was invited to try out for the U.S. men’s basketball team for the Summer Olympics of 1984 but didn’t make the final cut.

However, he did make it onto the famous “Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympics, which included basketball legends like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Scottie Pippen.

Barkley ended up as the highest-scoring member of the team, setting a record for the highest three-point field goal percentage in U.S. men’s Olympic history. Despite being known for trash-talking, he helped lead the team to a gold medal.

In 1994, Barkley led the team to another gold medal in Atlanta. The Dream Team’s incredible roster made history and was placed into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Sports Illustrated hailed them as “arguably the most dominant squad ever assembled in any sport,” Their success sparked renewed interest in basketball worldwide.
