Who Was Brian Gibson? 

Brian was born on September 22, 1944, in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. 

He had a sister named June. Gibson went to Southend High School for Boys and later pursued medicine at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. 

Additionally, he studied the History of Science at Darwin College, Cambridge. 

Gibson owned residences in both London and Los Angeles. He tied the knot with Lynn Whitfield in 1990; they have a daughter named Grace. 

However, the couple later divorced. Gibson then married the artist Paula Rae Gibson, and they had a daughter named Raphaela. Tragically, Gibson passed away at 59 in London on January 4, 2004, after battling cancer.

He directed the 1979 BBC film Blue Remembered Hills, starring Helen Mirren, earning him a BAFTA Award for Best Director. 

Gibson’s film directorial debut was with Breaking Glass (1980), followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side in 1986. 

In 1989, he directed Ben Kingsley in the HBO television film Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story. 

In 1990, Gibson produced the miniseries Drug Wars: The Camarena Story, starring Steven and Benicio Del Toro. 

The HBO tv movie The Josephine Baker Story earned him a Primetime Emmy and a Directors Guild of America Award. 

In 1993, he directed the Oscar-nominated film What’s Love Got to Do with It, Angela and Laurence Fishburne, which led to a first-look deal with Touchstone Pictures. 

Gibson went on to direct Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin in The Juror (1996) and the British film Still Crazy (1998), starring Bill Nighy and Billy Connolly. 

He also acted as a producer for Frida (2002), featuring Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina. Sadly, Gibson was diagnosed with cancer while preparing to direct a movie for 20th Century Fox and collaborating on a script with his wife.

Whitfield later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from Howard University in 1957 and was among the first African Americans to enroll in the master’s degree program at the UCLA Film School. 

As a highly influential arts administrator, he was vital in establishing various performing arts institutions in the United States. Additionally, he was married to actress Lynn Whitfield from 1974 to 1978.

Vantile Emmanuel Whitfield Career 

In 1963, Whitfield and Frank Silvera established the American Theatre in Los Angeles. At this place, he provided acting classes along with Beah Richards, Whitman Mayo, and Isabel Sanford. 

Whitfield also became the first African-American production designer to work on Broadway when he created the sets, lights, and costumes for Silvera’s production of James Baldwin’s play, The Amen Corner, in the same year.

Vantile Emmanuel Whitfield Death 

On January 9, 2005, Whitfield passed away due to complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. However, he established the Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles (PASLA), where he was the producing artistic director. PASLA aimed to train young people from inner cities in the performing arts.
