This network, predominately made up of white proprietors, has a history of excluding minority applicants from leadership roles, especially those involving head coaches.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Todd Bowles, the Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Tomlin, and the newly appointed DeMeco Ryans of something like the Houston Texans are all the only 3 Black coaches in the NFL at the moment. The Miami Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel also identifies as multiracial.

David Tepper, the owner of the Carolina Panthers, has underlined his dedication to dismantling the NFL’s “old boys’ network” by promoting diversity on the team’s administrative staff. Tepper said there was no consideration of race in the choice of Frank Reich against Steve Wilks to lead the squad.
