He began his career as a representative of Russia before transferring to Uzbekistan in 1996. The championship winner of Uzbekistan from 1997 to 2003 is Skorniakov.
He competed for Uzbekistan in the Winter Olympics in 1998 and 2002. In January 2000, Skorniakov wed Tatiana Malinina.
Following the passing of previous coach Igor Ksenofontov, Skorniakov and Malinina coached each other in the latter stages of their careers.
