Bryant Gumbel, a graduate of Bates College in the early 70s, began working as a sportscaster immediately after graduation.
He started his career with KNBC-TV in Los Angeles before moving to NBC Sports in the mid-70s.
After serving at the last minute for Jane Pauley, he swiftly established himself as the front-runner for the “Today” co-anchor job.
NBC News decided to compromise and choose Gumbel as the program’s anchor and Chris Wallace as a third, Washington-based anchor, despite the strong opinions of several in the NBC News division that Brokaw should be returned by a man news correspondent rather than a sports reporter.
The Gumbel-Pauley-Wallace agreement was ineffective and only lasted nine months. In September 1982, NBC News chose to make Gumbel the primary anchor of “Today” with Pauley as his co-anchor since ABC’s “Good Morning America” was outperforming “Today” in the ratings and fast expanding its lead.
Although the Gumbel-Pauley duo had trouble getting into a routine during their first two years as “Today” anchors, the “Today Show” eventually overtook other morning newscasts in popularity.
Pauley left “Today” in December 1989. Gumbel and Deborah Norville had a one-year-only working relationship.
In April 1991, Katie Couric took her position, and the Gumbel-Couric combo helped the show’s emphasis on public affairs as the morning news program throughout the 1992 presidential campaign.
The program regained the top spot in the ratings by December 1995. Gumbel’s work on “Today” brought him numerous Emmys and a sizable fan base.
He ranks after Matt Lauer and Katie Couric as the co-host with the third-longest tenure. After 15 years, Gumbel retired from the program on January 3, 1997.
