Heart-Stopping Surgery Tale: Niagara Falls Resident Shares Experience With Go Red For Women
AMHERST, NY (WKBW) — The American Heart Organization held its Go Red for Women luncheon at Reikart House in Amherst hours after news of Kim Pegula’s cardiac arrest spread.
Annette Adamczak taught hands-on CPR to Buffalo school students and guests at the event.
“When you push down, you’re circulating blood throughout the body,” explained Adamczak.
Heart disease continues to be the leading reason of death for women.
Adamczak was moved by the news of Pegula’s daughter saving her life through CPR.
“It brought tears to my eyes knowing that somebody knew CPR and made a difference in a loved one’s life,” said Adamczak.
Adamczak began teaching CPR after her 14-year-old daughter Emily Rose passed away from sudden cardiac arrest during a soccer game in Akron in 2009. She considers it her “goal and mission” to educate others.
As the Go Red for Women event took place, Kim Pegula’s story highlighted the occurrence of 350,000 annual out-of-hospital heart attacks, with 70% happening in homes.
Director Of The American Heart Association
According to Kristy Smorol, Communications Director of the American Heart Association, in emergencies such as Pegula’s, it is often a family member who performs CPR.
So, being trained in CPR means being equipped to save the life of someone close to you.
Smorol also mentioned that the organization saw a surge in demand for CPR training in the community after the cardiac arrest of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin during a football game in December.
Fatima Matthews from Niagara Falls also shared her journey as a survivor of congestive heart disease.
She was diagnosed with postpartum cardiomyopathy after giving birth at 30 and had an internal defibrillator implanted in her heart by doctors.
