Jodi Arias is not an ordinary story of a murder, but it is based on a real person who killed her boyfriend, Travis Alexander, in the name of love.
The horrific incident occurred on the 4th of June 2008 in the comfort space of Travis’s home, where his ex-girlfriend didn’t take a moment to slit his throat and shoot him to death.
Who Is Jodi Arias?
On the 9th of July, 1980, William Angelo and Sandy S. Arias welcomed their daughter Jodi Arias into this world.
She was brought up in Salinas, California, where she attended Yreka Union High School. However, she dropped out in the 11th grade.
Growing up, she stated that her parents abused her. She further added that they used to beat her with a belt. Hence, she was raised in a family that abandoned her.
On the other hand, friends of Jodi A. claimed in an interview that she was quiet and easy to talk to. She had a creative side, which made her prominent in the class.
In addition to the creative side of Jodi A., she was also very passionate about photography. However, one thing she loved the most also became one of the reasons for her downfall.
In her early years, to escape and survive financially, she took up several jobs as a professional photographer.
Later, in 2001 she started working at a Californian restaurant, where she met Darryl Brewer, whom she started dating in 2003.
Three years later, Jodi A. began working for a company known as Legalshield today. That’s when it all began with Travis Alexander.
Who Is Travis Alexander, Boyfriend Of Jodi Arias?
Travis Victor Alexander opened his eyes to this world on the 28th of July, 1977, to Gary David and Pamela Elizabeth.
When Travis turned 11, he moved to his paternal grandparents’ house. However, after his father died in 1997, his grandparents cared for all his siblings.
His grandmother was a faithful lady who taught him the teachings of Mormonism. Hence, Travis grew up with a strong sense of faith.
He took up the job as a salesperson for Legalshield while simultaneously being a motivational speaker for different companies.
The Time When Jodi Arias Meet Travis Alexander
The duo met in September 2006 at a PPL conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Travis was present at the former meeting as a motivational speaker.
The charm in how he talked infatuated Jodi A., who then asked him out, and the two became friends in the first meeting.
To get even closer to Travis, Jodi A. converted to the faith of Mormonism. In November of 2006, she was baptised by Alexander in the church.
The two started dating in February 2007. She took a huge step toward their relationship and moved to Mesa, Arizona.
Travis and Jodi A. maintained a strong bond for a year and a half.
It is reported that friends of Travis didn’t have quite a good opinion of his girlfriend, and they believed his relationship to be turbulent.
However, their relationship exceeded the faithful rules of Travis of avoiding a physical relationship. Both Jodi and he were involved in sexual activities several times.
However, Travis gradually started feeling guilty for being unfaithful to Mormonism, so after dating for five months, he decided to break up with his girlfriend.
Jodi A. moved back to Yreka in the house of her grandparents. Still, she kept visiting her ex-boyfriend, and the fragmented friendship turned into a kinky relationship based on physical love only.
Travis, however, began seeing other women in the summer of 2007. It is reported through his friends that during this time, Jodi A. started stalking him.
The relationship between both started to strain as Jodi A. was allegedly found misbehaving with Travis on certain occasions and even breaking the mirror of his car at one point.
Moreover, what proved to be the limit of Jodi’s jealousy was when Travis changed his travel companion for the trip planned on 15th June to some other girl instead of her.
The Day Of Gruesome Murder
On the 4th of June 2008, Travis was murdered at his residence in Mesa. However, his dead body was discovered dead on the 9th of June.
Upon missing an important conference on 9 June, Travis’s friends called him several times but didn’t receive any response.
The concerned group of friends raided his house just to find pools of blood. They found Travis’s body lying in the bathroom.
His throat was slashed open. He had a wound on his head and defensive wounds all over his body.
A .25 calibre bullet was also found near the dead body. His friends immediately called 9-1-1 to report the incident.
The rescuers inquired if Travis had any bad hand with anyone, but the friends only suggested Jodi Arias’s name as she was suspected of stalking him.
Trial Rounds Of Jodi Arias
Jodi A. was taken into trial. She told different stories on different occasions. She claimed that she wasn’t even present in Mesa on the day of the Murder.
In one of the stories, Jodi A. claimed that on the 2nd of June, she called her boyfriend four times between 1 am and 3 am, but he didn’t respond.
According to her, the last time Travis and she spoke on call was around 4 am on the same day.
She continued that she rented a car in Redding, California, around 8 am to go on a trip to Salt Lake City for a work meeting.
She was already on her way to Utah by the evening of 3rd June, where she met her co-worker and friend Ryan Burns.
In an interview, Ryan Burns stated that he noticed the blonde hair of Jodi A. was now dark brown. However, she attended the conference and returned by the 6th of June.
Further, the investigation found that when Jodi A. returned the car on the 7th of June, it had driven 4500 km.
In conclusion, throughout the trial, Jodi A. insisted on the fact that she was away from Mesa when the incident happened and that she called Travis a lot of times as she was concerned for his well-being.
However, the investigators found a camera on the crime scene through which they traced the time of the murder.
The camera also included photographs of Travis and Jodi Arias that were sexually explicit, taken right before the incident happened.
Moreover, the bullet found at the crime scene was the same .25 calibre handgun stolen from Jodi Arias’s grandparent’s house.
In addition, the DNA found in the blood was reported to be a mixture of the duo, and when the report was presented to Jodi A., she changed her side of the story.
She stated that she was with Travis when he was murdered by two unknown people who broke into his house.
The trial continued until 9th July, with different verdicts by Jodi A. each time. However, she was set free for not being guilty in September 2008.
The second round of trials began in January 2013 on the urge of Travis’s family. On the 6th of February, Jodi Arias confronted that she had murdered her ex-boyfriend.
She further concluded that she was a victim of violence at the hands of her boyfriend.
Finally, on the 8th of May, the court held Jodi Arias accountable for the murder, and she was sentenced to a lifetime in prison on April 13, 2015.
During the time Jodi A. was in court, she was also under constant investigation and observation.
The strange behaviour of the former Californian girl made the experts diagnose her with borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
When Jodi A. pleaded guilty she said in court,
“To this day, I can’t believe that I was capable of doing something that terrible,”
Arias said at the time
“I’m truly disgusted and repulsed with myself. I’m horrified because of what I did, and I wish there were some way I could take it back.”Source
Many psychologists who have read the case of Jodi Arias have assumed her to be a sociopath. However, she was never clinically diagnosed nor treated.
Life Of Jodi Arias In Prison
A crime documentary named “Cellmate Secrets: Jodi Arias” was aired, interviewing the cell mates and friends of the former murderer.
Her cellmate, Donovan Bering, stated that she thought Jodi Arias was a model when she first watched her walk in.
She further concluded that they got along very well as she seemed friendly.
However, Bering also alleged Jodi A. for using her flirty nature and sexuality to get things done by the male guards.
In addition to Jodi Arias’s behaviour in prison, she filed a lawsuit against her lawyer Kirk Nurmi blaming him for violating the rules of ethical conduct.
She blamed him so because he wrote a book called Trapped With Ms Arias, including everything in it that she might not have agreed with.
However, Nurmi, in defence, said that this was just a way for Jodi A. to attack men that didn’t agree with her.
He stated, “Of course, no one person has suffered at the hands of Ms Arias (more) than Mr Alexander, and I look forward to clearing the air on all the derogatory assertions that Ms Arias made about him as I defend against the outrageous claims made in this lawsuit.”
Nonetheless, Nurmi left his law practice not to surrender to allegations made by Jodi Arias but to leave the case for once and all.
Is Jodi Arias In A Relationship?
Jodi A. maintained an intimate relationship with a guy named Benjamin Ernst from behind bars.
She even considered marrying him but the relationship between the two was complicated, and there have been no recent updates.
The relationship further deteriorated when she was deprived of her contact privileges in 2016 for swearing at a guard.
Where Is Jodi Arias Today?
Jodi A., currently 39 years old, was imprisoned in Arizona State Prison Complex after the verdict. However, later she moved to Estrella Jail and Maricopa County Jail.
According to the recent reports published in 2020, Jodi A. is serving her time at the Perryville Prison, Arizona.
The stated prison is an hour away from the hometown of Travis in Mesa.
Moreover, it was also reported that Jodi A. has been selling her artwork in prison secretly. She gets away with it because she is flirty with the guards.
The former reason for being flirty with the guards to get special treatment was also why her cell mates hated her.
